Custom Molder Converts Parts to Thermoset Process

Combined with organic and inorganic fibers and fillers, phenolics provide dimensionally stable compounds with excellent moldability.

Phenolic Material Characteristics
Electrical Insulating, Creep resistance, Dimensional stability, Thermal stability, Hardness, Compressive Strength            See additional characteristics

-Mechanical properties: High modulus- outstanding resistance to deformation under load. Good compressive strength. Resilient materials obtained by modifying with rubber of nylon. Limitations are that forms are hard and brittle. Impact strength not high except with cord, fabric, glass and butadiene filled grades. Hence high breakage rates during transportation have been reported.  Reinforced compounds can have Low to No shrink (Glass fiber .0020 in/in ASTM D955)

-Thermal properties: Good dimensional stability over wide temperature range. Self extinguishing grades available. Limitations are that upper temperature limit 150°C [302°F] (continuous) and 260°C [450°F] for short-term operation. This can be extended depending upon fillers used.  Steam resistance.

-Electrical properties: Mineral filled grades used for highest electrical properties, although power factor still variable. Limitation is the tendency to form tracking paths at high voltages. Electrical properties adversely affected by hot, wet conditions, especially wood-filled grades.

-Environmental properties: Chemical resistance to chlorine, common solvents, weak acids and most detergents. Very low water absorption. Limitation is that it is not stable in presence of alkalis or strong oxidizing acids. Surface finish adversely affected by hot, wet conditions, especially wood-filled grades.

-Melamine Phenolics: Combine the decorative possibilities and tracking resistance of melamine with the easier molding and cheapness of phenolics. They have better resistance to electrical surface tracking, but are not as resistant as aminos. In contrast to phenolics, they are color stable to light and can be supplied in light colors.

Wall Thickness

We would like at least .080".   Minimum wall thickness of about 0.050" is most effective, with a typical thickness of 0.093" to 0.312".   Thicker sections can be used to maximize structural strength on specific applications. A higher impact material and thinner walls, for example 0.125in thick throughout the part design, can be an economical solution to strength concerns.
